What is your process of creating work for a freelance client?

After a client has reached out to me with a project and we have discussed their needs, I will prepare a quote for the work and licensing. Once that is agreed upon, I will draft up a contract. After the contract is finalized, I will begin working on the sketch.

I start each project researching and then sketching by hand. I work from the materials a client supplies, my own resources, my own photo references, and scientific knowledge. The sketch is the foundation for each project and the most important step. I send the sketch to the client to thoroughly review, and complete the revisions to ensure the illustration meets their goals.

After the sketch is approved, I work on the first draft. This is when I take the sketch into digital illustration software and create the final look of the image. I send this draft to the client to review as well, this is the last round of revisions.

I make changes to the illustration if needed, and then send the final draft for approval. Once the illustration is finished, I supply the agreed upon high resolution files.

How long does it take to complete a project?

This depends on the complexity and scope of the project. For most illustrations, I complete the sketch within a week, and the first draft within 2 weeks. Depending on client feedback and complexity, an illustration can be finished in under 3 weeks. I ask for 3 weeks before any hard deadlines, but rush projects can be completed for an additional fee.
